Photography

Whatever your favourite outdoor photography subject is, you’re sure to find it here in Elliot Lake. Trees, rocks, water and an astonishing abundance of flora and fauna are yours to explore!

Landscapes

Elliot Lake is a dream destination for beginner and expert outdoor and wildlife photographers alike. In any of our four distinct seasons, the City offers an exceptional variety of landscapes, from ancient mountains and stark cliff faces to rich boreal forests and meandering rivers.  If panorama photography is your thing, the Fire Tower’s view stretches all the way to Manitoulin Island and the North Channel on clear days. With hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams within the City limits, isolated islands, waterfalls and beachscapes are almost infinite. The sunsets are legendary, with some of the most vibrant skyscapes unfolding right in the centre of town, on Elliot Lake itself.

Wildlife

For those looking to capture images of the most iconic animals of Northern Ontario, Elliot Lake is an excellent place to set up your tripod. Well within the City limits some of Canada’s most majestic mammals reside, including moose, black bears and timber wolves. Patience and knowledgeable day tripping will reward photographers with the opportunity to capture river otters, pine martens, mink, ermine, lynx, bobcat and even the elusive fisher, without having to sleep in a tent. Our lakes, rivers and streams are home to all of Ontario’s turtle species and a significant number of reptiles and amphibians. Macro and closeup photographers will discover a virtually infinite abundance of moss, lichen, fungi and insect life on the rocks, shores and forest floors.

Elliot Lake is in the Americas Flyway for migratory birds of North America, with many species nesting and breeding here in the summer months. The spring sees an enormous variety of Arctic-bound species feeding in our lakes, while the innumerable warblers sing symphonies welcoming the melt. Throughout the summer birds of prey are abundant, as are large waterfowl including herons and bitterns. Dedicated bird photographers will delight in rare opportunities to photograph blackbacked woodpeckers and bobolinks. The Sheriff Creek Nature Sanctuary boasts more than 140 confirmed species sightings on eBird, and has several sheltered viewing huts in which you are welcome to set up your gear.

Dark Sky Preserve

Mississagi Park, just 20 minutes north of town is pursuing a Dark Sky Preserve certification to promote the quality of the night sky, where Bortle scale readings are consistently measured below 2. Astrophotography opportunities abound inside the Park spring to fall, with full year dark sky viewing available at Flack Lake.
